Taxus Baccata

Taxus Baccata belongs to the family Yew hedge plants.  It is an evergreen tree with a dense, conical crown. The leaves are dark green, needle-like, and arranged in two rows.

How do you plant the Taxus Baccata?

Planting this plant takes careful soil preperation and site selection since unfavourable growing conditions can result in a weak and unattractive hedge. When planted in the right circumstances the Taxus Baccata can reach up to 1219cm in height. Here are a few tips:

  • Choose a suitable planting site
  • Position the plant about 1 meter at minimum away from structures. Their spreading roots may damage walkways and foundations.
  • Use a home test kit to test the PH of the soil. If the PH is more than 7.5 amend the soil using mildly acidic compost, if it is lower than 6.0, apply neutral compost. Work this into the soil thoroughly.
  • Dig a trench twice the width and 1 or 2 cm deeper as high as the clod. The bottom of the trench should be level en the sides straight.
  • Place the plant in the trench and fill back the soil. Hold the plant upright while refilling the hole. Water the soil as you fill the trench.
  • Water generously after planting and keep watering it for the first few months.
  • Spread a thin layer of mulch aroundthe base of the plant to keep the soil moist and prevent it from growing any weeds.

The Taxus Baccata does not like waterlogged soils. When planted in these soils it often results in Phytophthora root rotting. It can both be grown in full sun and partial shade.
